Definition
The indicator shows the proportion (%) of Finnish people who have used health services during the last 12 months among respondents to the FinSote postal survey. The survey contained the following question about health service use because of mental health problems: In the past 12 months, have you visited any of the following services because of mental health issues or substance abuse problems? The services included in the question were: 1) a health centre, occupational health care or student health care, 2) a mental health clinic or psychiatry outpatient clinic, 3) an A-Clinic, detoxification or other substance abuse treatment, 4) a private practice (doctor, psychologist, etc.), 5) a psychiatric or other hospital, 6) other place of care. The options were no; yes, because of mental health problems; yes, because of substance abuse problems. The indicator gives an overall idea of how people seek help for mental health problems. The survey also covers private and third sector services. The indicator complements the picture provided by register-based data on service use related to mental health problems, especially in regions where a wide range of different services is available.
