Defining Attributes

Definition

Number of patients who have been admitted to hospital with any cause and die within 90 days of their last discharge from a VTE related cause expressed as a rate per 100,000 adult hospital admissions.

Numerator

Count of all deaths with VTE as the primary cause of death either in or out of hospital. The NHS Outcomes Framework Indicator only includes deaths within 90 days post discharge from hospital and allows for VTE anywhere on the death certificate (i.e. does not have to be the primary cause).

Denominator

The number of adult hospital admissions in England for any cause for a given financial year.
