Defining Attributes

Definition

Patient experience of accident and emergency, measured by scoring the results of a selection of questions from the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department Survey.

Numerator

The indicator is a composite measure, calculated as the average of five survey questions from the A&E survey. While you were in the A&E department, did a doctor or nurse explain your condition and treatment in a way you could understand?; Did you have confidence and trust in the doctors and nurses examining and treating you?; Were you involved as much as you wanted to be in decisions about your care and treatment?; Do you think the hospital staff did everything they could to help control your pain?; Overall, did you feel you were treated with respect and dignity while you were in the A&E Department?

Denominator

This is a composite measure. See technical specifications for detailed calculations and scoring.

Exclusions

Figures are based on the most recent accident and emergency department survey, which is completed by a sample of patients aged 16 years and over who attended an accident and emergency department during the sample period. A complete list of eligibility and participation criteria for the survey is available at the following link: www.nhssurveys.org/Filestore/AE16/AE16Samplinghandbookforinx0002house_trusts.pdf
