Defining Attributes

Definition

Hospital discharges with iatrogenic pneumothorax (secondary diagnosis) per 1,000 surgical and medical discharges for patients ages 18 years and older

Numerator

Discharges, among cases meeting the inclusion and exclusion rules for the denominator, with a secondary ICD-10-CM diagnosis code for iatrogenic pneumothorax (IATROID*) .

Denominator

Surgical or medical discharges for patients ages 18 years and older. Surgical (Appendix E: SURGI2R) and medical (Appendix C: MEDIC2R) discharges are defined by specific MS-DRG codes

Exclusions

Excludes discharges with a principal diagnosis of nontraumatic pneumothorax; discharges with a secondary diagnosis of non-traumatic pneumothorax present on admission; with chest trauma (rib fractures, traumatic pneumothorax and related chest wall inquires); with pleural effusion; with thoracic surgery, including lung or pleural biopsy, or diaphragmatic repair, with a potentially trans-pleural cardiac procedure; and obstetric discharges
