Definition
The percentage of unplanned readmission to the same hospital within 30 days post-acute or elective, inpatient or day-case surgical admission to the same hospital.
Numerator
This QI is calculated as the number of surgical discharges (inpatient & day case) in the denominator period which resulted in an emergency readmission to the same hospital within 30 days multiplied by 100.
Denominator
Number of surgical discharges (elective and emergency) in the denominator period (denominator period is set 30 days in arrears).
Exclusions
Death are excluded from the denominator.
