Defining Attributes

Definition

Unplanned/unexpected readmissions are those readmissions where the principal diagnosis and readmission interval indicate that the readmission may be related to the care provided by the hospital during the patient's episode of care for the management of a knee replacement.

Numerator

Number of separations for hospitals which meet all of the criteria under 'Numerator criteria' including: The episode of care is a readmission to the same hospital following an episode of care in which a knee replacement was performed, the readmission interval is 60 days.

Denominator

Total separations for management of knee replacement in a specified reference period (meeting all of the denominator criteria): procedure field including total arthroplasty of knee, care type = acute.

Exclusions

Episodes meeting the inclusion criteria but that result from a 'type change' from the index episode should not be counted as a readmission. Also excludes separation mode = died in hospital.
