Defining Attributes

Definition

Percentage of residents with potential preventable hospital admission. Potentially preventable hospitalisations based on AHRQ's Prevention Quality Indicators project (Davies et al., 2009), which developed a set of indicators for conditions for which good outpatient care can potentially prevent the need for hospitalisation or for which early intervention can prevent complications or more severe disease. These conditions have been used in the nursing home setting as well, as high-quality primary care in the nursing home can similarly prevent hospitalisations (Carter, 2003; Intrator, Zinn, & Mor, 2004).
