Collection and Reporting Attributes
Type of Data Collection
Data Collection Methods
Quarterly or annually (financial year). The National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD) is compiled from data supplied by the state and territory health authorities. It is a collection of electronic confidentialised summary records for separations (that is, episodes of care) in public and private hospitals in Australia. Data are collected at each hospital from patient administrative and clinical record systems. Hospitals forward data to the relevant state or territory health authority on a regular basis (e.g. monthly). State and territory health authorities provide the data to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare for national collation, on an annual basis. State and territory health authorities provide the data to the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority for national collation, on a quarterly basis.
