Defining Attributes

Definition

Percentage of psychiatric patients admitted to an inpatient psychiatric facility for major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder who filled a prescription for evidence-based medication within 2 days prior to discharge and 30 days post-discharge.

Numerator

Discharges with a principal diagnosis of major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder in the denominator population for which patients were dispensed at least one evidence-based outpatient medication within 2 days prior to discharge through 30 days post discharge.

Denominator

Patients discharged from an inpatient psychiatric facility with a principal diagnosis of major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, 18 years of age or older at admission, alive at discharge and alive during the follow-up period, with a discharge status code indicating that they were discharged to home or home health care.

Exclusions

Discharged patients who received Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) during the inpatient stay or follow-up period, received Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) during the inpatient stay or follow-up period, were pregnant at discharge, had a secondary diagnosis of delirium at discharge, or had a principal diagnosis of schizophrenia with a secondary diagnosis of dementia at discharge.
